Organising Occupational Therapy
for Your Child

If you’d like the Little Hands OT team to work with your child, here’s what you can expect.

Initial application process

You can enquire about therapy either by email or via the form on our website. Our admin team will contact you to get more details of your child and their therapy needs. As our clinic’s focus is Early Intervention, we only accept referrals for children ages 6 and under with the exception of children with equipment needs. Please consider this when making a referral.

If we believe we can help your child, you will join our waitlist. If not, we will do all we can to refer you to other, more suitable therapists and practitioners.

Waitlist

Demand for services is high. We’d love to help every child immediately, but that’s often not possible. We operate a waitlist, and we try to help as many kids as possible, as quickly as possible. We aim to be fair, but we may need to prioritise children with specific urgent issues – for example, very young children or those who need equipment urgently. Delay for these children can make current issues significantly worse and we have a duty of care.

As we believe you contacted us at a time when you needed help, we offer a Start-Up Session that aims to bridge the gap, giving you clear, practical support while you wait for an ongoing therapy spot. If you are interested in finding out more regarding this, indicate this on the waitlist form you will receive after getting in touch with us. In addition, while your child is on the waitlist – or even if your child is not – you are invited to attend our parent and community support events, including parent information nights and baby drop-ins. These events may provide some helpful tips and strategies you can implement straight away to gain some reassurance, it’s also a great opportunity to meet other parents.

Starting therapy

When we have the availability to work with your child, we start by assigning an occupational therapist to you. Your child generally works with one OT for individual therapy, to build a relationship of trust. For children over two years old, we start with a phone session to get to know you, your child, your situation and your concerns. We use this session to answer your questions too, and to give you a clearer idea of what to expect.

The next step is in-clinic therapy sessions. In the first session, the therapist will play with your child, to build rapport, get to know them and to assess their skill set. From that point on, therapy will be tailored specifically to your child. Individual therapy will continue, usually at the clinic. We may recommend group interventions, or in some circumstances additional sessions with a therapy assistant. (All our therapy assistants are studying to become an occupational therapist.)
