You and your family are an essential part of your child’s life and journey. We don’t work in a vacuum: we work hand-in-hand with you. Whether it’s sharing knowledge or ensuring that therapy ‘homework’ is practical for your family situation, we’re here to support you and your child to get results in life as well as in the clinic.
02
Diagnoses are important for funding bodies, but for us what matters is what your child can do now, so we can set a ‘just right’ challenge to encourage them to learn new skills and thrive. We believe there is not a limit to what any child can achieve and therefore we will support them to defy the odds, break down barriers and exceed expectations.
01
While disability or delay is a part of your child’s story, it’s far from their whole story. Your child is a unique and special individual. Therefore, we provide interventions tailored to your child and always see your child in the context of the family.
04
Our ultimate goal is that the disability of your child, although part of your family's life, is not the defining part. We aim to support your child and you in a way that allows everyone to live a full and fulfilling life.
Our daily experience backs up our deepest beliefs:
What’s included in our individual therapy?
Individual therapy sessions are exactly that – individual! We design your child’s program especially for them.
The first step in developing a therapy program is assessment. Our assessment process consists of a the following steps:
-
You know your child better than anyone, so we want to hear what you have to say. We typically have an initial discussion on the phone to identify your concerns and your child’s goals.
-
We have a clinic-based session with you and your child present. This session’s main goal is to build rapport and allow the therapist to form an initial idea about your child’s ability level through targeted observations. The information gathered from the initial visit informs the assessment process and intervention planning.
-
The observations inform which standardised assessments are best suited to measure your child's current ability level. The assessment will form a baseline which will enable us to evaluate the intervention effectiveness and form part of the report to funding bodies.
-
Following observations and assessment, we’ll develop an intervention plan based on the goals identified. We have you and your child attend the sessions. During the sessions we work with your child on their goals. We also discuss what we see with you to understand how our observations align with your experiences. We then suggest activities for you to work on with them at home.
Therapy will focus on the skills required to allow your child to be as independent as possible as well as to interact with their peers. This could include one or more of:
-
Sensory processing and emotional regulation
-
Hand skills including fine motor skills, hand writing skills and hand strength
-
Play skills and social interaction
-
Self-care skills including, toileting, dressing, sleep and personal hygiene
-
Managing mealtimes including picky eating, meal preparation and utensil use
-
Executive functioning skills including time management and organisation, focus and attention, task initiation and planning
-
Skills of independence including cooking, shopping and road safety
-
Visual perception including eye-hand coordination, near and far point copying and finding items in busy environments
Where appropriate we will
-
Prescribe equipment such as wheelchairs, strollers, hygiene equipment and sleep systems
-
Fit a hand splint to facilitate function
-
Offer animal-assisted therapy
-
Individual therapy session frequency is dependent on the needs and goals of each child. Our most common frequency is fortnightly, which allows families to implement strategies and practise new skills. This way progress can be assessed and strategies amended based on the feedback provided.
Usually we work with clients for many years. That’s why we care so much about relationships with you and the rest of your family as well. Our strategies and recommendations are always provided in the context of your family and your community.
We may recommend group therapy sessions for your child in addition to their individual therapy. Our services are generally clinic-based, as this provides an environment with fewer distractions. Where circumstances require, we may organise sessions outside the clinic.
